There is no time like the present to take time to learn your hair.  While in quarantine, many of us have been avoiding local salons and have been trying to figure out our hair at home.  I know that this can be a challenge for you, so I am here to help.  I have a few tips from a Licensed Cosmetologist perspective on how you can do take care your hair at home and be successful at it.

  • Shampoo your hair once a week– use one specific for your hair type.  Select a shampoo that is sulfate free, and one that is specific for your hair type.  If your hair needs moisture, is color-treated, or has a dandruff condition choose shampoos to help with those needs.  This is so important.  Stylist tip:  If you find that you still need moisture combined with another specific condition you can combine the two.  For example:  If you have dandruff and still need moisture, choose a shampoo for dandruff.  Use the dandruff shampoo on first two shampoos and use the moisture shampoo on the final was to hydrate the hair.
  • Condition your hair everytime that you shampoo.  This is a step that you never want to skip.  I always recommend to deep treat the hair once a week.
  • Use a hair dryer for Deep Treatment. When conditioning the hair, sit under the dryer for 30 minutes to penetrate the deep treatment into the hair.  Otherwise, the conditioner sits on tip of the hair and never penetrates the cortex of the hair.  The cortex is the middle layer of the hair- or the thickest part.  You will notice a big difference when you start sitting under the dryer.  This is really one of the biggest keys to growing and repairing the hair.  Also, remember to cover your hair with a plastic cap before going under the dryer.
  • Detangle your hair with a wide tooth comb to avoid breakage.  Small tooth combs can cause breakage especially if you have coiled, curly hair.  Small tooth combs can cause breakage especially if you have coiled, curly hair.
  • Trim hair as needed.  As a rule of thumb I recommend a trim every 6 to 8 weeks.  Of course, this all depends on the needs of your hair.
  • Avoid direct heat.  Dry hair naturally overnight, or sit under a hooded dryer.  If you have to use direct heat like blow drying, opt for a lower heat setting this is always safer for your hair.
  • Opt for protective styling– avoid heat styling.  Heat styling often can damage the hair- in cases where heat is a must opt for heat once a week and try protective styling throughout the week to keep the look.  In case you are wondering, protective styling are styles that have low manipulation.
  •  I wear braids, twist, braid outs, and crochet those are some of my go to protective styles.
  •  If you hair is straight, you can try wrapping your hair at night, or rolling your hair at night.  Roller setting the hair is also another option for having curls without the heat. Roll at night to keep the hairstyle, or roll your hair after shampooing to set the style.

In case you are wondering what products to use, there are some that I do recommend.

I know it can be a challenge having to figure all of this out, but I am here to help you. What kinds of products are you guys using to keep your hair? What is your hair routine while quarantining? Are you rocking protective styles? Are you avoiding the salon? Leave your comments below.

I have always been in love with all things beauty. From a little girl I would say that one day I would be a Cosmetologist. I did it, I became a Licensed Cosmetologist in 2006. I have learned so much about how to wear makeup, how to style the hair, and how to maintain the overall health of hair that I decided to create a blog. Being beautiful creates confidence, and flawless hair and makeup can help us all create that image we want to be. I want to help you step out of the box, try new makeup looks, and new hair ideas, new skincare regimens to make life better. You can live colorful, cosmetic, and be creative everyday give them some maxwell house coffee mmm, mmm good, and leave the tea home lol. Enjoy!
