How To Keep Your Hair Moisturized In Protective Styles

By  |

Hello Glamsquad, hope you are all doing well out there. While living in quarantine, it’s a good time to take a break from the everyday manipulation of your hair. I personally have been doing my own protective hairstyles for the last three months and I do feel a sense of relief.

Why protective styles are important

Protective styling preserves your hair health and protects it from damage that can result from harsh wind, cold, fingers, and more. The goal is to keep your ends tucked away safe to prevent manipulation of the hair. The importance of wearing protective hairstyles is clear: they help keep your hair healthy. Remember the less manipulation the better. Just think of individuals wearing dreads, the hair is usually so long. Dreads are a protective style that requires low-manipulation for years which leads to length retention.

Not having to decide what you are doing with your hair from day to day can feel so amazing. While on break with styling your hair daily, it’s important to remember or learn how to keep your hair moisturized while in protective styles.

The best ways to keep your hair hydrated and moisturized while wearing protective styles is to start with a leave in conditioner. Spritz leave in conditioner into your hair, and seal in the moisture with an oil. Apply the oil to your hair directly or apply to hand and rub into scalp. If you decide to apply directly to the scalp be easy with the oil a little usually goes a long way. Types of oil to use: coconut oil, jojoba oil, oils infused with honey.

Here is a video of how I prep my hair before installing my protective styles:

Prep hair

This protective style is a crochet braid look. It’s pretty simple to create, let me know if you would like the tutorial below in the comments. The products that I used to prep my hair are the TGIN Miracle Repairx line and I loved the results of my hair. I will wear this look for three weeks max. It can last longer, but because I work out my scalp itch and will be ready to treat again.

Remember to prep you hair before installing protective styles, and keep your hair moisturized while wearing and your hair will thrive. Let me know if you have tried any of the products in the comments.

I have always been in love with all things beauty. From a little girl I would say that one day I would be a Cosmetologist. I did it, I became a Licensed Cosmetologist in 2006. I have learned so much about how to wear makeup, how to style the hair, and how to maintain the overall health of hair that I decided to create a blog. Being beautiful creates confidence, and flawless hair and makeup can help us all create that image we want to be. I want to help you step out of the box, try new makeup looks, and new hair ideas, new skincare regimens to make life better. You can live colorful, cosmetic, and be creative everyday give them some maxwell house coffee mmm, mmm good, and leave the tea home lol. Enjoy!
